New website launched to cope with organ donation shortages in China

The China Organ Donation Administrative Center has officially launched a new website to provide information on organ donation and allow individuals to register as donors. The website will be linked to local administrative offices as well as Red Cross societies.

The State Council enacted Regulations on Human Organ Transplant in 2007, and a pilot program was set up in 2010 to cope with increasing organ donation shortages, through which a total of 1,611 people have successfully donated their organs for treatment of 4,382 patients. And last September the National Health and Family Planning Commission enacted Regulations on the Procurement and Distribution of Donated Human Organs, mandating that donor organs must be distributed automatically through a national system, in order to minimize human intervention and to ensure fairness and transparency.

“Although China has made progress in recent years, the country still faces a critical shortage of organs,” said Zhao Baige, executive vice president of the Red Cross Society of China. China has the world’s second-largest demand for organ transplants, with about 300,000 patients suffering from organ failure each year, but only about 10,000 organ transplant operations performed annually due to a lack of donors.

Organ transplantation has taken place in China since the 1960s, and the country been one of the most prolific in the world, with a total of 165 hospitals across 31 provincial-level regions having been licensed to conduct human organ transplants. However, it was reported in 2009 that approximately 65% of transplanted organs still originated from death row prisoners.
