Fast food could make it harder for women to get pregnant

Women who eat more fruit and less fast food may have an easier time conceiving children, according to a new study.

Infertility

The study defined infertility as taking more than 12 months to conceive (this definition has also been adopted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Lifestyle factors such as drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and obesity have already been associated with infertility. However the effects of diet on infertility are still not well understood, with prior studies focused on women already diagnosed with or receiving treatments for infertility.

Fast Food & Fruits

In contrast to prior studies‚ the recent study “Pre-pregnancy fast food and fruit intake is associated with time to pregnancy,” published in the medical journal Human Reproduction, focused on women in the general population.

Fast Food

The study found that women who ate fast food at least four (4) times per week took on average one month longer to become pregnant than women who rarely or never ate fast food. Fast food was defined as food from take-away or fast food outlets, and included fried chicken, pizza, hamburgers and french fries.

Fruits

The study also found that women who ate fruit at least three (3) times per day got pregnant faster than women who rarely or never ate fruit. Fruit was defined to include both fresh fruit and fruit juice.

Other

No association was observed between infertility and the women’s intake of green leafy vegetables (e.g., spinach, cabbage, lettuce, broccoli) or fish (e.g., salmon, trout, sardines, shellfish and shrimp).

The study cannot establish a definitive connection between these dietary factors and infertility, having not included analysis of other known factors — most notably information regarding the women’s male partners in conception. Nevertheless, the authors of the study believe that “[s]mall modifications in dietary intake may have benefits for improving fertility and should be encouraged both population-wide and in couples seeking conception.”
